Despite Reservations, H Mart is Expanding

Cherry Hill’s planning board has approved expansion plans for a local supermarket, but not without voicing strong concerns about the site’s current condition.

The grocery store, situated on the first floor, plans to expand into the second floor to add a food court, according to Sam Kim, an executive with H Mart. The second floor currently houses a row of shuttered businesses that will be demolished as part of the renovation. The complex, known as D&Q Plaza, named after a long-gone ski shop, sits on a hill, allowing both levels to open directly onto parking lots.

Attorney David Scolnic, representing the property owner, said this business model has proven successful at other locations. H Mart, which operates nearly 100 stores across 14 states, is the largest Asian supermarket chain in the U.S., according to its website.

Despite optimism about the expansion, board members and a local resident voiced disappointment over the plaza’s current state during the meeting.
